Welcome to an overdue update! There’s a lot of ground to cover today :)
First of all we are incredibly grateful that Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles ONLINE will be coming out on Steam. Because of your awesome support, it took less than two months to get Greenlit, which most people would not expect from a puzzle game. Most of the comments were very positive and the feedback was very encouraging.
So we went back to the drawing board with our puzzle game to address some things:
First of all, features we wanted included since the first iteration, but couldn’t because of time or platform constraints.
There will be many different types of blocks in addition to the ones you might already know. They will start to appear at higher levels, and once you unlock them, you can select them forever!
New stages, more puzzles, more modes, more content.
And since the community is so keen on modding, we are looking into letting you design your own board/pieces, so you can customize your own game or share your creations with others!
Wind and Water: Rebalance
For first-time players, we will be greatly rebalancing the game.
Wind and Water was always meant to be a very hard-core and rather difficult puzzle game, where practice and skill would be rewarded by high combos and chains, that score big points.
There is also the billions of unlockable content that skillful players could uncover. Like a fighting game.
However, for casual puzzle players or young children it could be very complicated to get into. Even the most basic mechanic is difficult for some.
That’s why, with the new audience that Steam will bring to the game, we have decided to include more modes that are instant to learn and fun to play, that will eventually open up the doors for the main hard-as-nails mode, should the player want to get more in depth.
This way, the game will be much more accessible: Players who just want to kill some quick time, don’t want to watch a tutorial on how to play, or want to isolate a certain skill they want to practice can do so easily, as well, as unlock a bunch of rewards and achievements in return!
And for veterans, experts, and speed runners, we have paid attention to your feedback, and included a lot of new features only you will ever know about!
For instance, the one-frame exploit for Illegal Elementals (higher than 4x) wasn’t fixed, so instead, we will be adding additional bonuses for people with sick skills. Honestly, when you go as far as to “discover” these kinds of unintended moves that even WE didn’t know about, you deserve some recognition, not to have it patched.
We have carefully watched your replays to look for little things to fix here and there, and because of your advanced knowledge of the game, it is now much more robust and balanced. And we will need your skill again when we test the Online Battle waters!
Now on to Chosen…
This will probably be the last update of this kind for CHOSEN. The game has gotten to the point that pretty much all we can reveal right now are spoilers!! But we still feel like sharing some shots today ;)
Instead, we will try something new: tutorials.
Recently, a couple of professional animator colleagues and friends asked about courses on pixel art and animation. I also have to make guidelines for the new members of our team, who will be lending us their talent. For this reason, we might start to make tutorials again about the particular way we create game assets. Pixel art, creating the engine, chiptune music, and such…
Also, we will be announcing said new members of the team soon, who have already helped in a lot of ways behind the scenes! These updates are in part possible because of them!
With CHOSEN we have decided to go all-out and try to create a very particular and memorable experience. We want to participate in International Festivals again, go meet you all at Game Conventions when the game is more complete, and be a part of the Indie Scene again. Awesome games are being made, and it’s a great time to develop games!
And last but not least, another little update about a project you may know about. And another “spoiler”… there will be some secret crossing over between games. Will you be able to find them?
